I thought this was a Midwest thing. My wife’s parents do this every Xmas eve. I’ve found that it’s best countered by ordering pizza and Greek salad at the neighborhood Italian restaurant for everyone who wants some real food to eat. So far, I’ve converted everyone but my father-in-law who refuses to concede, somewhat irritatated by the turncoats in his family. Long live new traditions! lol

Interesting! My grandpa grew up in Colorado—not sure how far back in his family it went. Long live new traditions, indeed.

I was just describing my grandmother's oyster stew to my husband. My grandmother was Pennsylvania Dutch and one heck of a cook as well as seamstress and a beautiful embroiderer. She also painted plates, colored black and white pictures, and made dolls. I was saying that her oyster stew was basically oysters, cream, and butter. I remember the golden bubbles of butter floating on top. She was born in 1898 and I ate her oyster stew in the 1960s and 70s. I wish I could tell her now how much she taught me about cooking and sewing and the great gentlewoman crafts. i am making this tomorrow for my family as I had already planned. Merry Christmas all!
